DIY Bar Cabinet Makeover
I’m back! I’ve been away working on a few projects and finally finished this little beauty - a bar cabinet I picked up on Gumtree Australia a few months back for $40 👏🏻👏🏻
I broke my usual rules when I chose this piece to refurb because I had such a clear vision for the makeover.. but it became a big job 🙈 I usually only choose pieces made from solid wood (this was a veneer finish) plus it was coated in a thick clear varnish - a nightmare combination to sand! I ended up using a chemical stripper to speed it along.
Needed:
- Cabinet - $40 Gumtree Australia
- Legs x 4 - 450mm Slimline Turned Victorian Ash $17.50 each from Hammersmith DIY Products
- Angled leg plates for 5/16 lag screws x 4 $3 each Hammersmith DIY Products (to attach the legs to the cabinet)
- Handle - Luna Pull XL Brass from Lo & Co Interiors $64 - yes, more expensive than the cabinet! But I think worth it ❤️
- Brass Triple Row Glass Hanging Rack x2 $16.50 each Dan Murphy's
- White Knight Metal Spray Brass $29 Bunnings Warehouse Australia for metal fixtures
- Strokes White Enamel 100ml $11 Bunnings Warehouse Australia
- Various colours of acrylic stickers cut into small pieces to create a terrazzo look
- Cabot’s Cedar Tone Wood Putty $9.40 Bunnings Warehouse Australia
- Sander. Again I used my Ryobi Palm Sander ($79.98 Bunnings Warehouse Australia). I used 80 grit to remove the stain and 240 grit for a smooth finish
- Optional: Chemical stripper. I had some deck stripper I used to remove the thick varnish before sanding.
- Wax - Aussie Furniture Wax (Clear) $21.95 Catch
- Drill/screwdriver
